There are some people whose presence is felt not because they demand attention, but because of the way they make others feel when they are around. Elvin Hernandez was one of those people.

Elvin, 60, of Bridgeport, Connecticut, passed away on September 25, 2026, following injuries sustained after he was tragically struck while on the roadway. His sudden passing leaves an emptiness among those who knew and loved him, but it also leaves behind countless memories of a man whose generosity, laughter, friendship, and unmistakable personality made an impression wherever life took him.

Born on July 12, 1966, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Elvin was the son of the late Rufino Hernandez and Virginia Rivera Hernandez. His Puerto Rican roots were an important part of who he was, but Elvin also possessed a genuine curiosity about the larger world. He enjoyed learning about different cultures, experiencing their traditions, and—perhaps most enthusiastically—trying their food. And if a good dessert happened to follow the meal, even better.

Elvin worked as a DOT  maintenance 3 sweeper operator for the Connecticut Department of Transportation, a profession well suited to a man who spent so much of his life on the move and among people. Those closest to Elvin describe him as easygoing, loving, friendly, generous, and remarkably selfless. He had a way of helping people without waiting to be asked. If someone crossed his path and needed a hand, Elvin was often willing to give it. There was a natural generosity about him—not something performed for recognition, but simply part of the way he lived. He loved people. He loved conversation. He loved to laugh. He was often described as the life of the party, frequently smiling and laughing and bringing an energy to gatherings that people naturally gravitated toward. He also had his own signature catwalk, a little personality trait that brought smiles and laughter to those around him. It was just one of the many things that made Elvin uniquely himself and so unforgettable. His friendliness allowed him to connect with people from many different walks of life, while his respect for others remained one of the qualities his family remembers most. Travel also brought Elvin great enjoyment. For him, seeing another place was about more than arriving somewhere new; it was an opportunity to experience people, culture, food, and life from a different perspective. Those experiences fed the curiosity that remained part of him throughout his life. Elvin shared his life with his beloved Maria 'Candy' Pichinte, who brought him immense joy and happiness. Those who knew him often remarked that he had never been happier.

He leaves to cherish his memory his sisters, Maida Hernandez, Ivonne Espinal and her husband, Manuel Espinal; his beloved Maria “Candy” Pichinte; nieces, Michelle, Stephanie, Kassandra, Jazmine, Samantha, nephews, Michael, Manuelito, Goddaughter Shamy, many extended relatives, friends, coworkers, and others fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. Elvin's death came suddenly and far too soon. Yet the manner in which his life ended should never overshadow the life that came before it. He was the man who helped. The man who gave without being asked. The man who could turn an ordinary gathering into one filled with laughter. The man who enjoyed discovering something new, tasting something different, traveling somewhere he had never been, and sharing those experiences with the people around him. And he was the man whose smile and laughter will now live in the memories of those who loved him. For those left behind, there will undoubtedly be moments when his absence feels especially heavy—a familiar joke that goes unsaid, an empty place at a gathering, a meal he would have enjoyed, or a story that immediately brings his name to mind. Yet those moments will also serve as reminders that Elvin was here, he was loved, and his life mattered.

A viewing will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026 at the Funeraria Luz de Paz beginning at 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM followed by interment in the Mt. Grove Easton Cemetery, Easton, CT.

Though his journey ended unexpectedly, the kindness he offered, the laughter he shared, the people he helped, and the love he gave remain.
