Joao de Barros, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on January 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on June 22, 1944, in Fogo, Cape Verde, and led a life filled with attachment to family, community, and music.
Joao's journey took him to Cape Verde, Africa, where he lived for over 30 years, building connections and friendships that spanned continents. His warmth and friendly demeanor made him a cherished member of any community he joined. After moving to the United States, he worked as a landscaper and machinist at Owens Factory, finding joy in his work and contributing positively to those around him.
One of Joao's proudest accomplishments was his marriage to his beloved wife Maria, with whom he shared 46 wonderful years. Together, they nurtured a family that brought him immense pride and joy. He is survived by his devoted wife, Maria; his children, Joao, John Jr., and Aulina; and his adored grandchildren, Jayden, Alexis, Jonathan, Na'Kayla, and Ismael. His legacy of love and devotion will live on through them.
In addition to his immediate family, Joao is survived by his siblings Guilherme, Maria, Manuel and Pedro, with whom he shared many cherished moments. He also now rests with his parents, Francisco Cardoso Barros and Angelina Teixeira Brandao, along with siblings Manuel, Nazulino, Antonio, and Antoineta, who have predeceased him.
Joao had a passion for music that resonated deeply within his soul. An accomplished guitarist and vocalist, he played in a traditional Cape Verdean band, sharing the beauty of his culture through the art of music. His melodies brought people together and created memories that will be treasured by all who had the pleasure of witnessing his performances. He was also an active member of the Cape Verdean Club in Bridgeport, CT.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joao's life during the viewing services at Funeraria Luz De Paz in Bridgeport, CT, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on Thursday, January 8, from 8:45 AM to 9:45 AM. A Mass will be held at St. Augustine's Cathedral on January 8 at 10:00 AM, followed by a burial at Mt. Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport, CT at 11:15 AM.
