Marcelo Rosa Ortiz, born April 27, 1930, to Sinforoso Rosa and Herminia Ortiz in Comerio, Puerto Rico, passed away on August 14, 2025, at 95 years old, surrounded by his loving family.
Determined to provide a better life for his wife and future children, Marcelo arrived in New York City in the 1950s. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he served honorably in the Korean War, defending the freedoms we enjoy today. After the war, his life journey took him from working in New York’s bustling fashion district on Canal Street to building a life in Connecticut, where he resided for the remainder of his years.
Known for his joyful spirit and servant’s heart, Marcelo found great purpose in helping others in his 25-plus year career as a Licensed Professional Counselor for the State of Connecticut. Specifically, those facing life’s most difficult challenges, offering them hope for a brighter path forward. He loved nothing more than being surrounded by his family and remained fiercely independent until only months before his unexpected illness. He was one of the Mets' biggest fans and shared many great times watching games with those he loved. His willpower, devotion, and genuine nature left a lasting impression on all who knew him, and his heart was one that many admired.
Marcelo was an avid reader—if not a newspaper, there was always an open book somewhere in his room. He fancied himself as an author and poet; and though he was not John Grisham or Tom Clancy, his favorite authors, he did publish two books. He spent many hours in front of his old Smith Corona, typing away.
Marcelo is survived by his devoted children: Magdalena Lohnes (Barry), Elizabeth Ortiz and Genesis Ortiz (Jahaira). Marcelo was the proud grandfather of Marcell Ryan (Yaditza), Tieara Rivera, Morgan Ryan, Orlando Rivera (Jaime), Abraham Rivera (Sarah), Genesis Ortiz Jr., and Jacob Ortiz. He was also a cherished great-grandfather to Adrianna, Marcell Jr., Alex, Madison, Mia, Malcolm, Eloise, and Riley. Most recently, he was blessed with a great-great-granddaughter, Magdalena (Maggie). He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and a host of devoted friends.
Marcelo was predeceased by his wife, Magdalena Ortiz and son, Francisco Rosa. He is lovingly remembered by Francisco’s children: Jacqueline Torres, Joseph Rosa, Brenda Rosa, and the late Francisco Rosa Jr.
His passing marks the closing of a family generation, following the loss of his brother, Cruz O. Rosa, just a few months ago.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Funeraria Luz de Paz, 426 E. Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06608.
