Listen to Obituary

Maria J. Pires, a beacon of joy and generosity, left this world on December 8, 2025, at her residence in Bridgeport, Connecticut. She was born on March 6, 1936, in Montelegre, Portugal and devoted her life to her family, friends, and community. Maria dedicated her career as a faithful factory worker in the manufacturing industry, earning the love and respect of many in the “Hollow” section of Bridgeport where she became a cherished part of the fabric of the community.

Maria was known for her vibrant personality; she was joyful, energetic, and thoughtful. Her spirit brightened the lives of those around her, and her generous heart was evident in the countless ways she helped those in need. With her green thumb, she nurtured plants and enjoyed the beauty of the outdoors, always finding peace and solace in nature. Knitting was not just a hobby for Maria but a way she could create warmth and comfort for her loved ones.

Her strongest legacy lies in her family, whom she adored profoundly. Maria leaves behind her beloved children: Ana Gabriel, Fatima Calderon, and José Cabeleira. She took immense pride in being a grandmother to seven grandchildren and a great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren. Each of their lives was enriched by the love she provided, and the values she instilled in them will carry forward as a tribute to her memory.

Tragically, Maria passed just one day after her beloved daughter, Lucia Maria Cabeleira, a loss that felt like a sudden and profound void. She was predeceased by her parents, Pedro and Ana Pires, who laid the foundation of love and kindness that Maria continued to share throughout her life.

Maria's commitment to giving back to her community was most evident in her daily volunteer work at the Merton House, where she found purpose in extending her support to those in need. Her contributions resonated deeply with those she touched; she was a true friend, a source of strength, and an embodiment of compassion.

Family, friends, and all those who had the honor of knowing her will remember Maria J. Pires not only for her unwavering spirit but for the warmth and love she shared with the world. As we gather to celebrate her life, we find comfort in the legacy she leaves behind and the countless memories that will forever remain in our hearts.

Visitation services will be held at Funeraria Luz De Paz in Bridgeport for Maria and her daughter Lucia Maria, where loved ones can pay their respects on Monday, December 15 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on Tuesday, December 16 from 8:45 AM to 9:45 AM. A Mass will follow at St. Augustine's Cathedral at 10:00 AM, leading to her final resting place at Mt. Grove Cemetery at 11:30 AM.

Though Maria has departed from this earth, her spirit will continue to shine brightly through the love and kindness she cultivated during her wonderful life.
