Ramona Nunez, known as the heart of her family, passed away peacefully at home on February 28, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on April 2, 1946, in Camuy, Puerto Rico, the daughter of the late Tito Perez Vargas and Juana Perez Santiago. She was one of fifteen children and came from a large family. Ramona courageously battled leukemia, facing every challenge with bravery, strength, and grace. Her deep faith in God gave her the strength to face her illness with courage and acceptance. From the beginning she often said, “Que sea lo que Dios quiera,” trusting in God’s will. Puerto Rico always remained close to her heart, and she was deeply proud of her roots and the island she loved.
As the rock of her family, Ramona grounded everyone with warmth, humor, and unconditional love. Ramona was known for always telling jokes and making people laugh.
Ramona's greatest joy was her family. She treasured gatherings filled with music, dancing, love, and laughter, creating memories that will last forever. Ramona enjoyed going on vacation with her daughters, spending time with her siblings, especially her little sister Cuca and her brothers Melo and Pere and being with family whenever she could. She often spoke fondly of her childhood and reminded those around her to always be happy, just as she was. Ramona also had a remarkable talent for sewing. She lovingly repaired clothes for family and friends, shortened pants, and even made outfits and dresses with great care. If something needed fixing, she was the first one everyone turned to, always ready to help with kindness and loving hands. To us, she was perfect. Her love and the values she shared will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
Ramona is survived by her loving husband, Sergio Nunez; her three devoted daughters, Lillian Melendez and her husband Jimmy Melendez, Lourdes Tosado, and Diana Perez; and her seven siblings: Tito Alberto Perez, Aida Gloria Perez, Hector Felipe Perez (Pere), Juan Antonio Perez (Tono), Maria Luisa Santos (Cuca), Carmelo Antonio Perez (Melito), and Juan Ramon Gonzalez (Ramon). Ramona was a proud grandmother to twelve grandchildren: Johnathan Tosado, Vanessa Ortiz, Adolfo Orengo, Araceli Orengo, Cassandra Orengo, Krystal Nieves, Eliana Baker, Gabriel Cruz, Annalise Stevens, Jaxson Stevens, Lillian Elwood, and her beloved grandson the late Luis Antonio DelValle ("Tony"), who always held a special place in her heart. She was also blessed with ten great-grandchildren she loved to brag about to her friends, and leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who loved her dearly.
Ramona is reunited in heaven with her beloved grandson Luis Antonio DelValle ("Tony"), her siblings Esther Candelaria Grajales, Vicente Perez (Chente), Pablo Perez (Papo), and Maria Felicita Perez (Marita), as well as three siblings who passed away in childhood. Knowing she is reunited with Tony brings comfort and peace to our hearts.
The family is deeply grateful to the care team at Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Health, especially Dr. Lourdes Mendez, for their compassion and support. Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the Smilow Cancer Center by visiting www.ynhh.org/smilow.
A celebration of Ramona's life will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM at Funeraria Luz de Paz, 426 East Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, CT. Interment will follow immediately after at St. Michael's Cemetery, 2205 Stratford Avenue, Stratford, CT.
Ramona will always be in our hearts. Let us honor her by embracing every moment, just as she did.
